Singing together in harmony

Sechelt, B.C. - December 9, 2016

Nearly five years ago, Lowry Olafson, a Gibsons performing songwriter, professional speaker and workshop leader, offered a contest to win a free songwriting workshop to write a theme song for a worthy organization. Arbutus Sounds Chorus, a local chapter of Sweet Adelines International, entered that contest telling why they felt they should win, mentioning things like their love of singing in the community, and the sisterhood and warmth of their organization. And win they did!

Sweet Sounds: Ladies of Saratoga Soundtrack raise their voices in joy

Saratoga Springs, NY - December 8, 2016

The ladies of Saratoga Soundtrack, an all-female a cappella singing group, don’t sing because it’s a job. They sing because it’s a joy. Started in 2006 by a small group of women, the informal choristers quickly grew and became part of Sweet Adelines International, receiving their official charter on Aug. 8, 2008. Since then, they have steadily gained a stellar reputation in the area as a highly accomplished and entertaining troupe.

Choruses rouse up a Dickens of a good holiday time

Fairbanks, AK - December 1, 2016

Who doesn’t know the story of Scrooge in Charles Dickens’ “The Christmas Carol”? You know, the lonely, tight-fisted old curmudgeon who hates Christmas (bah humbug!) and thinks those who don’t, “ ... live in a world of fools with no right to be merry.” He is, as we recall, visited throughout the story by the ghost of Marley, his former business partner, and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Each tries to convince Scrooge of the error of his ways and give him cause to change his outlook which, of course, he does by story’s end. The feast he attends with his bookkeeper, Bob Cratchit, and his family, including the sickly Tiny Tim, is proof of his change of heart.
